Energies are contagious. Seriously. If you surround yourself with negative people and energies, chances are, you will subconsciously become a more negative person and develop negative habits. And, if you practice negative habits, your overall attitude and outlook on life will slowly become more cynical as well. This works vice-versa too. If you surround yourself with positive people and energies, and practice habits that inspire a positive mind, you will develop a positive outlook on life. Obviously there are times when you really do need to be serious, but, don’t take life too seriously. Rather than get worked up about a day in which everything that could possibly go wrong does, take a deep breath and a step back from the situation and just laugh. Laugh at your mistakes and embarrassing moments (and learn from them). Find humor in unfortunate scenarios. Laughter is good for your soul.
Complain less, appreciate more.
This is pretty self explanatory. We all have our fair share of problems, of course, some worse than others, but, when it comes right down to it, pity-parties really won’t do you any good. It’s okay to feel bummed, upset, angry, etc about a situation, but don’t dwell on things for too long. Instead, look for the positive aspects of any situation. Things could always be worse…
Be a “now” kind of person.
Learn to motivate yourself. Don’t put things off. Get things done, and get them done now. Seeing your ‘to-do list’ shrink will always put you in a good mood, and feeling like you’re accomplishing things will make you feel great.
Setting goals and being in the habit of constantly working towards something will give you a permanent feeling of purpose. With no goals in place, you might sometimes feel like you’re in a rut and not moving forward in life.
Look forward to one thing every day.
If you have something you are looking forward to each and every day, each day will always be filled with more excitement, happiness, and positive thoughts. Look for little things to look forward to. A new coffee flavor to try before work, beautiful weather, a lunch date with a friend, or even new pens to use in the office. Finding things to be excited about every day is a great and healthy habit.
Surround yourself with positive people.
As said, energies are contagious. Surround yourself with hardworking, motivated, positive individuals who will have inspiring, intelligent conversations with you. Surround yourself with people who are kind, always doing something new, and enjoy helping others. These are the people that will inspire the best sides of you to shine as well.
Talk about ideas and ventures, not people.
There’s the saying that small minds discuss people, while great minds discuss ideas and life. Gossiping really won’t do you any good. You won’t learn from it and your mind won’t grow from it. Get into the habit of discussing life, ideas, and important concepts while on a coffee date with your friends, rather than gossiping about what your neighbors are up to.
Learn to let go.
Accept what is. If you have the power to change it and make a situation better, then by all means, do so. But, if you look at a bad situation and realize that there is truly nothing you can do, then just accept it for what it is, use it as a learning experience for the future, and move on. Don’t dwell on the past, because the past is simply that. The past. Move on with your life.
Be happy for others.
We get it, sometimes life can feel like one big competition and it can be hard to see those around you really succeeding, or getting to do great things while you feel like you aren’t so successful or lucky. A little bit of jealousy is natural, and actually healthy because it will motivate you to work towards those successes too, but, learning to truly feel happy for friends, family, and peers when something great happens in their life is really important.
